Gemma can’t believe her luck when the star football player starts flirting with her. Max is totally swoon-worthy, and even gets her quirky sense of humor. So when he asks out her so-called best friend Addison, Gemma’s heartbroken. Then Addison pressures Gemma to join the date with one of Max’s friends. But the more time they all spend together, the harder Gemma falls for Max. She can’t help thinking that Max likes her back—it’s just too bad he’s already dating Addison. How can Gemma get the guy she wants without going after her best friend’s boyfriend?
Review:
Jennifer Echols is one of those authors that I read very near to release day because I’ve loved all of her books (and have read them all). I had no idea that The One That I Want was releasing early via ebook until Jennifer Echols announced that the ebook would be out before the print version on Twitter (yay Twitter)!
I love love the covers on these new ones, I don’t really know why – maybe because the contemporaries of this similar theme from Simon and Schuster have all looked the same and I like matching things.
The One That I Want is one of Echols’ “romantic comedies” (she also writes contemporaries in the “romantic drama” subcategory – Forget You, Love Story, and Going Too Far fall there). I have enjoyed her dramas slightly more than her comedies in general just because of the content, and that pattern was followed for The One That I Want – I enjoyed myself while reading, but it didn’t surpass my favorite (Forget You).
This book deals heavily with a love triangle (square?) and Gemma dealing with liking her best friend’s boyfriend. It was fun to watch Gemma work through her emotions and attempt to maintain her integrity. All of the characters were ones that I enjoyed, and the story itself kept me entertained as I flew on a plane for the holidays.
Another pretty solid addition to her romantic comedies, Jennifer Echols continues to be one of my favorite contemporary authors!

A love square? Now that’s complicated.

You should know this review is totally encouraging to me to keep trying Jennifer Echols, I mean although I did not like the Boys Next Door, that could simply be a fluke and this might be the one that I will like, that or Forget You.

I would try a romantic drama – this one is very similar to Boys Next Door, in that it’s a rom com! I have to be in certain moods to read them because they are so light and fluffy.

I’m going to be honest. Every J. Echols book I’ve read has been a disappointment. HOWEVER! I haven’t read Going Too Far, which has (from what I’ve seen) been a widespread favorite. I still plan on reading GtF, but I really hope that I find another J. Echols book to love :) Your review helps that motivation to want to tackle hug this particular book.

I think you have to have a certain attitude going into them – the romantic comedies are meant to be light fluffy things, just like all of the other Simon Pulse Rom Coms… the romantic dramas have a little more meat in them so you can expect a little more. I think Going Too Far is probably the widespread favorite, but I did like Forget You the most :)
Glad to hear that you liked it. I haven’t read any of her comedies and I should change that because I love most of her dramas!

If you ever plan a beach trip her comedies would be perfect! :)
