1. What is your favorite month?
My favorite month is May. I love it when it starts to warm up and the flowers bloom. Also, I’m a teacher (I teach Creative Dance to children in preschools), and the start of May always lets me know that the summer break is just ahead.
2. What brand of shoes do you prefer?
My favorite shoe brand is Dansko. I’m a comfort kind of gal, but I like it that their shoes are stylish too.
3. How many pairs of jeans do you own?
I own three pairs of jeans: one pair of Levis, one pair of Calvin Kleins, and one pair of Gloria Vanderbilts. I like the Levis because they’re baggy and comfy, the Calvin Kleins because they look like boy jeans, and the Gloria Vanderbilts because they fit like a glove.
4. Describe your perfect date.
I’m married, so my perfect date would be with my husband. We’d take the ferry over to Whidbey Island, which is this beautiful island near Seattle, where I live. We’d have a romantic dinner overlooking the water, and then maybe see a funny movie, since we both love to laugh.
5. Where do you love to go for dinner?
Oops, I should have read this question before I answered the last one. But actually, my favorite place for dinner is a family-owned Mexican restaurant near my house. They give you free warm tortillas with salsa before the meal and chocolate mints afterward.
About Flyaway:
Fifteen-year-old Stevie Calhoun is used to taking care of herself. But one night, her mom, who works as an exotic dancer in a downtown Seattle nightclub, never comes home.
That’s the night Stevie’s life turns upside down.
It’s the night that kicks off an extraordinary summer: the summer Stevie has to stay with her annoyingly perfect Aunt Mindy; the summer she learns to care for injured and abandoned birds; the summer she gets to know Alan, the meanest guy in high school.
But most of all, it’s the summer she finds out the truth about Mom.

More about Helen Landalf (from HelenLandalf.com):
In my forties, I finally discovered my true passion: writing novels for Young Adults. Perhaps because my own teen years were so challenging, I feel a strong desire to speak from my heart to young people going through that sometimes frightening, sometimes exhilarating stage of life.
I write in a basement office in my home in Seattle, Washington, which I share with my husband, Steven, our butterscotch tabby, Sunny, our toy Yorkie, Toto, and sometimes with my two stepsons, Dane and Jonathan.

As beautiful as May is in these parts it’s horrible on allergy sufferers. Man the dogwoods are brutal that time of year.
