1. What is your favorite household chore?
I like doing the dishes after my boyfriendcooks me dinner. He makes mean turkey chili.

2. Where is the last place you went on an airplane?
I was in Paris doing a creative writing program through Columbia University, and LA for the Emmy awards!

3. How many toppings do you order on pizza?
I rationalize eating pizza by topping it with veggies – artichoke and mushrooms is my favorite, or sometimes I’ll order arugula and tomato. The vegetables cancel out the cheese, right?

4. What time do you generally eat breakfast?
I’m always running late, so I usually pick up a coffee and scone at our neighborhood café on the way to the subway at around 10am.

But on the weekends we make coffee at home and lounge around and read the paper. I love making oatmeal with everything in it but the kitchen sink: raisins, banana, sliced almonds, cinnamon and honey.

5. Describe your favorite pair of shoes.
I like to treat myself to a special pair of shoes every time something truly fantastic happens. When I received my advance for BUNHEADS I bought this amazing pair of leopard platform boodies from Miu Miu. I wore them everywhere last year!

About Bunheads:
As a dancer with the ultra-prestigious Manhattan Ballet Company, nineteen-year-old Hannah Ward juggles intense rehearsals, dazzling performances and complicated backstage relationships. Up until now, Hannah has happily devoted her entire life to ballet.

But when she meets a handsome musician named Jacob, Hannah’s universe begins to change, and she must decide if she wants to compete against the other “bunheads” in the company for a star soloist spot or strike out on her own in the real world. Does she dare give up the gilded confines of the ballet for the freedoms of everyday life?

From SophieFlack.com:
After dancing with the New York City Ballet for nine years, Sophie retired from dance in 2009. Upon being featured in The New York Times, Sophie was approached by an editor from Little Brown, who asked if she would consider writing about her experience in the corps de ballet. She leapt for joy at having finally found an outlet for her inordinate amount of journals and years of experience as a ballet insider, and then sat down to begin re-imagining the world in which she had just spent the past decade. She also enrolled at Columbia University as an English major. The intensity of her newfound life actually felt familiar coming from the rigorous schedule of the corps de ballet.

  1. i have literally never been able to eat oatmeal. i always have much respect for the rest of the world, who apparently can. i realize that i am the minority. it’s a texture thing.

also, the cover of this book is so great!

  2. Sophie and I have something in common! Our favorite chore (if it could be called favorite) is the post meal kitchen cleaning. Nothing is better than a freshly cleaned kitchen!
