1. What is your favorite household chore?
I love to take care of my plants. Watering, cutting, changing the pots — I guess it’s a chore, but for me it is a ton of fun. Sometimes I see plants that people have thrown away on the curb and I rescue them for rehabilitation. If I kill a plant myself, that’s acceptable. But the idea of someone else throwing away a plant is sacrilege!

2. Where is the last place you went on an airplane?
The last place I went to on a plane was Portland, Oregon. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and my novel (I’LL BE THERE) is set primarily in Oregon, so the trip was wonderful in many ways.
3. How many toppings do you order on pizza?
I like pizza with pineapple and Canadian bacon. We call it Hawaiian pizza. I have no idea why, because it doesn’t seem really Hawaiian. And I was told it was first served in Canada in the 1960′s. And they LOVE this kind of pizza in Australia, and I made a movie there and can tell you that Australian/Hawaiian Pizza is fantastic. It’s a small world after all…
4. What time do you generally eat breakfast?
I eat breakfast at 7:30. I don’t drink coffee. But I have hot tea with milk every morning. And then all manner of breakfast food. Toast. Eggs. Yogurt. Bacon. Scones. All big on my list. I sometimes go to sleep at night happily thinking about the morning meal.
5. Describe your favorite pair of shoes.
My all-time favorite shoes was a pair of red leather cowboy boots that I got at a flea market while in junior high school. I wore those boots until it was just not possible to walk another step. I think I had them resoled three times. Now, looking back, I’m not sure what it was about them, because it is impossible to describe how cool I felt wearing those boots. I guess it was like the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Only it was me and my red cowboy boots. I walked taller in those shoes. And I don’t ride horses or rope cattle or anything like that. The boots made it through high school and then college. I wish I had them now.
About I’ll Be There:
Raised by an unstable father who keeps the family constantly on the move, Sam Border hasn’t been in a classroom since the second grade. He’s always been the rock for his younger brother Riddle, who stopped speaking long ago and instead makes sense of the world through his strange and intricate drawings. It’s said that the two boys speak with one voice–and that voice is Sam’s.
Then, Sam meets Emily Bell, and everything changes. The two share an immediate and intense attraction, and soon Sam and Riddle find themselves welcomed into the Bell’s home. Faced with normalcy for the first time, they know it’s too good to last.
