1. What is your favorite grocery store aisle?
I’ve got to say, I really pondered this. My first thought was the cookie and cracker aisle, because that’s where I get the Walkers Pure Butter

Shortbread that I like to have when I write. Yum!!! (And, oh, those Pepperidge Farms ones – the ovals with the dark chocolate and nuts??!!). But in the cookie aisle… Well, you have the angst of indecision. I can stand there and stare for way too long. So, no. Actually, I think I’m most cheery going down the cereal aisle. There, you can find all those great choices in big, easy-to-see boxes. Whatever your mood, you’re covered. You’ve got your Cap’n-Crunch- Let’s-Go-Wild option, or your Special-K-Aren’t-I-So-Fit-And-Healthy one. I love cereal. I can eat it all day. Pop tarts and granola bars are down there, too, and coffee and tea. Not just any old tea, either, but tea that promises “Calm” and “Refresh” and “Awake.” This, my friends, is grocery store happiness.

2. Tell us about a time you were embarrassed.
I once wore two different black shoes to a swanky photography show. Wait, and last week, another time. I sent an enthusiastic, effusive note of congratulations to an author I knew about the recent publication of his book. Well, I thought I knew him. I had gotten two names confused. The guy I wrote to was a complete stranger. He must be wondering why the heck I’m so thrilled and so excited to see that his book has been published! If I meet him, it will be entirely awkward. He will wonder where the love has gone, for sure.

3. If you could be a crayon, what color would you be?
Believe it or not, my kids and I have previously discussed this question in depth. We decided that my daughter would be a fiery red, my son a thoughtful blue. They say I would be the sort of yellow-orange you see in Italy. Warm and sunny, they say, and I think that’s mostly true.

4. Where is the last place you had a birthday party?
I had a little birthday party last year on one of the sailboats that my son, Nick, captains. It’s called Obsession, and it appears in my book, STAY. It’s a beautiful 70’ sailboat, and we were out on Puget Sound at sunset. We brought dinner and wine, and my daughter, Sam, brought presents. Nick surprised us with beautiful cream puffs from a nearby bakery. My sweet family (and all the other passengers on the boat) sang “Happy Birthday” as the sun went down in a show of pinks and oranges. Best. Birthday. Ever.

5. How many scarves do you own?
Hmm. Thirty? Is that a lot? Most of them have a story. I have one given to me on book tour, and a beautiful green silk one a friend brought back from Vietnam. I have super-bargain ones I got at Ross, and an expensive purple velvet one I got at a Seattle boutique. My favorites, though, are the chunky, warm ones my mother has knit for me. They are always made long enough to wind around a cold nose.

About The Story of Us:
Cricket’s on a self-imposed break from her longtime boyfriend—but she’s picked a bad week to sort out her love life. For one thing, her mother’s romance is taking center stage: After jilting two previous fiancés, her mom is finally marrying Dan Jax, whom Cricket loves. But as wedding attendees arrive for a week of festivities at a guesthouse whose hippie owners have a sweet, sexy son—Ash—complications arise:

Cricket’s future stepsisters make it clear they’re not happy about the marriage. An old friend decides this is the week to declare his love for Cricket. Grandpa chooses to reveal a big secret at a family gathering. Dan’s ex-wife shows up. And even the dogs—Cricket’s old, ill Jupiter and Dan’s young, lively Cruiser—seem to be declaring war.

While Cricket fears that Dan is in danger of becoming ditched husband-to-be number three, she’s also alarmed by her own desires. Because even though her boyfriend looms large in her mind, Ash is right in front of her….

From Amazon.com:
First of all, a confession. I am a literary addict. I read endlessly, voraciously. In lieu of a book, I will read cereal boxes (Cap’N Crunch breakfast jokes, Special K Heart Smart facts), shampoo bottles, pamphlets in doctors’ offices about kidney stones and allergies (neither of which I have), and even those self exam charts with the little arrows going around in circles. My books are multiplying, becoming furniture themselves – end tables, nightstands. On one wall, I have a bookshelf, minus the shelf. I get restless, even sad, when I leave a fictional world I love and am not yet immersed in another. The highest compliment I’ve gotten about one of my books was from a reader who said she read slower as she approached its end, rationed out the remaining pages because she couldn’t bear for it to be finished. Oh, joy. I knew just what she meant.

  2. HA!! I’ve actually done the two different shoe thing too. I’ve also forgotten to wear the right shoes. All dressed up for work but then look down when I get to the office to see I’ve got my dirty old flip flops I work around the house in on. Great interview!
