Book Summary:
All Chelsea wants to do this summer is hang out with her best friend, hone her talents as an ice cream connoisseur, and finally get over Ezra, the boy who broke her heart. But when Chelsea shows up for her summer job at Essex Historical Colonial Village (yes, really), it turns out Ezra’s working there too. Which makes moving on and forgetting Ezra a lot more complicated…even when Chelsea starts falling for someone new.
Maybe Chelsea should have known better than to think that a historical reenactment village could help her escape her past. But with Ezra all too present, and her new crush seeming all too off limits, all Chelsea knows is that she’s got a lot to figure out about love. Because those who don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it….
Review:
I had quite a bit of fun reading Past Perfect. It is centered around two historical reenactment villages, which is certainly the most unique contemporary setting I’ve read in a long time (maybe ever?).
Because the sites are across the street from each other, the teenagers on each side are constantly pulling pranks on each other, convinced that their reenactment site is better than the other. Chelsea is the narrator of Past Perfect, and we read along as she has boy problems (both in her village and in the rival one).
The setting was by far the best part of the book for me. There were many clever scenes with Chelsea and her coworkers (her parents included) that captured the essence of a reenactment village perfectly. I could visualize each scene perfectly, and found myself smiling when Chelsea found herself in a predicament related to being in character while at work.
The relationships in the book were okay. While I loved reading about Chelsea, her dad, and her best friend, I didn’t get the total connection I would have loved to have with any of them, which brought the book down a little for me. But I did really love the rest.
A unique setting, Past Perfect will have you smiling and wishing you worked at a reenactment village.

This sounds unique and really cute. Great review
Oh man, the plot of this book reminds me of the many field trips to colonial village type places I went on while growing up in Boston. I’m definitely going to have to read this one.

I agree, a very unique setting. Sure can’t tell much from the cover. Does it have anything to do with the book, other than being cute?

That’s a big gripe from a lot of people – the cover is awesome but really has nothing to do with the plot than I could tell. But it’s hard for me to hate that because I do really love that cover haha
This sounds like a really cute book, fun, quick.
I like the cover too, simple, but I like it!

I’ve only read two chapters so far but I laughed while reading both so I’m optimistic that I will enjoy the book overall. Not too sure about the characters yet.
