1. What is your favorite office supply?
I am a sucker for Post-It notes. I love them in all sizes and all colors, especially the bright, neon ones.
2. How many times did you go to a pool or beach this summer?
Alas, not once! But I have a “good” excuse. This summer I was undergoing radiation therapy for cancer (caught very early, NOT invasive, excellent prognosis) and I was not supposed to be in the sun, in chlorine, or in salt water. What a bummer. But it was a small price to pay for a clean bill of health. I’ll make up for it later!
3. Describe your favorite holiday tradition.
My mom started a great Christmas tradition. Every year, she would give my sister and me a Christmas tree ornament that in some way commemorated the year. We might get an ornament that represented a pet we had, or an accomplishment or trip-like a hoof pick painted red and green for the year I bought my first horse, or a little pair of eye glasses for the year I had Lasik surgery. My sister and I started doing the same for my mom. It becomes a fun game to find the right ornament (a hot air balloon for the year we sent my mom on a hot air balloon ride for her birthday!). Sometimes we even have to make it ourselves. So, every year, when I unpack my ornaments to decorate my tree, it’s like going through a scrap book.
4. Where is the last place you went on vacation?
NYC, my favorite city in the world!
5. What celebrity would you love to have dinner with?
Robert Downey Jr. But NOT for the obvious reason you might expect! Honest! Almost all of my books are about human resilience and second chances in some way or another. I never get tired of a good comeback story, or a story of someone rising again after being down. I think Downey’s real life story is incredibly inspiring. Plus, he’s witty and fun and would be a great dinner companion. His wife could come, too, just to prove my point that I love him for his phoenix story.
More about Reasons to be Happy:
Hannah’s parents are glamorous Hollywood royalty, and sometimes she feels like the ugly duckling in a family of swans. After her mother’s tragic death, Hannah’s grief is compounded by her desperate need to live up to her mother’s image. She tries to control her weight through Bulimia, and her devastated father is too distracted to notice. The secret of her eating disorder weighs heavily on Hannah, but the new eighth grade Beverly Hills clique she’s befriended only reinforces her desire to be beautiful. The only one who seems to notice, or care, that something is wrong is Jasper, the quirky mistfit.

I’m a fan of the index card myself. Got a stack of ‘em right next to the couch so I can write notes as I read and such.
