Fateful by Claudia Gray

It’s about a servant girl named Tess in 1912, who wants to escape from the house where she works, and most particularly the lecherous young lord of the manor. But that’s not her biggest problem. While on a voyage to America, where she plans to escape and start a new life, she meets Alec, who’s ruggedly handsome, fabulously wealthy, intelligent and yet so clearly troubled that she’d rather not fall for him, but she does. That also is not her biggest problem. Alec, it turns out, is a werewolf … one cursed to change every night, unless and until he surrenders his independence and joins the Brotherhood, a pack of violently misogynistic werewolves who have been tracking him for months. You’d think that would be their biggest problem, wouldn’t you?

But no. Their biggest problem — though they don’t know it yet — is that they’re aboard the RMS Titanic.

Please welcome Claudia Gray!

1. Have you always been interested in the Titanic?
Yes, definitely. Even as a small child, I remember reading accounts of the Titanic’s sinking and being totally absorbed in them. (Specifically, I recall one that was talking about one survivor’s tale of the ship breaking in two as it sank — which talked about how absolutely ridiculous that was. Almost nobody believed his version until they found the wreckage in the 1980s, with the ship split in two halves.) The Titanic is one of those subjects that only gets more interesting the more you learn.

2. What aspects of the ship setting were most fun for you to write?
The most fun, for me, was learning where everything was on the ship and figuring out what rooms and areas would be the best settings for different scenes. For instance, there’s a very important sequence that happens in the ship’s Turkish bath. And I decided to use the squash court for another setting even before I learned that it was one of the first rooms on the ship to flood — which fit in with the story perfectly. And, of course, it’s amazing just picturing yourself really being there.

3. Everyone is very intrigued with your werewolf/Titanic combination. Do you plan on any other unusual paranormal/history combinations in the future?
Like Zombies on the Hindenberg? No plans right now! But you never know, do you? And I actually have been tempted to tell other historical stories of the Brotherhood of Werewolves throughout the ages, so there’s no telling where they might turn up.

4. You’ve participated in several anthologies to date – if you could create an anthology on any topic in particular, what would you choose?
Great question! Maybe I’m twisted, but I’d love to see/read/write for an anthology that told really frightening stories — but all set at Christmas. Christmas horror, with the snow and the long nights and the big parties and shiny gifts under the tree and everything going TERRIBLY WRONG. Maybe this is why I am not asked to edit any anthologies.
