Book Summary:
Jonah is on a mission to break every bone in his body. Everyone knows that broken bones grow back stronger than they were before. And Jonah wants to be stronger—needs to be stronger—because everything around him is falling apart. Breaking, and then healing, is Jonah’s only way to cope with the stresses of home, girls, and the world on his shoulders.

When Jonah’s self-destructive spiral accelerates and he hits rock bottom, will he find true strength or surrender to his breaking point?

Review:
Let’s give it up for Hannah Moskowitz!

Break is her debut novel, and a great one at that. It’s a shorter book, but the storyline, action, and characters weren’t lacking.

From the first page you are sucked in to Jonah’s problems. The best part about Break (and, coincidentally, my favorite part of her other book Invincible Summer) are the characters. Jonah is desperate, and addicted to breaking his bones. He has a brother allergic to everything – this relationship was written perfectly. Jonah’s other family members all fit together, and Naomi really made me mad for blindly helping Jonah – maybe if I had more of her backstory I would have understood her reasoning there. When I have strong feelings for most all of the characters (whether good or bad) I know that they are written well, which is the case for Break.

Like many others, I found the ending to be a little off, but Moskowitz’s strong character writing made the book an overall hit for me. Reading about someone who breaks their own bones on purpose is not something I’ve read about before, but Ms. Moskowitz does an excellent job of setting the mood and showing how it would affect those around you.

Break’s plot could be a little extreme for some readers, and there are some vulgarities (which fit well with the characters). This is a book I could see a high school boy wanting to read, which is a big accomplishment from a teenage girl/woman writer.

  2. Break sounds interesting… I can’t even begin to see how she came up with the idea, but I guess that is what makes her so creative and talented! I haven’t heard of this book before… but I think I’ll look into it. If he actually succeeded at breaking his bones, is it graphic? Just thinking about it makes me shudder, I don’t know if I could read it if it was really in-depth.

Anyway, thanks for introducing me to a new title!

    • Hmmm it’s kind of graphic, yes. It’s not just “I broke my foot today,” it actually talks about what he’s doing or how he plans to do it. I think I only cringed maybe once from the situations – you could get your library to buy a copy and try it that way in case you don’t like those scenes!

  3. Hmmm to be honest I’m not even sure I would enjoy I would like reading about a teenage boy! LOL
It does sound like a powerful though.
