1. Tell us about some things on your bookshelves that aren’t books.
A lot of the things on my bookshelves that aren’t books are still bookish. Wow, talk about a lot of uses of the word “book” in one sentence. Anyway, I tend to put stuffed animals and beanie babies on the shelves. I like to think of them as the guardians of the books. Some of them are literary. For example, I have a little Olivia the Pig and a Paddington Bear. I also have some literary action figures–Jane Austen and Edgar Allan Poe. I actually bought the Poe action figure while on vacation in Maine last summer and had it in a carry on while flying home. I was with my parents and we had a ridiculously tight connection due to delays (as in should have been at our next gate ten minutes before our first plane landed). If we didn’t make our flight we’d get stuck in Detroit for the night, so we had to sprint at break neck speed through the airport. My father ran ahead to make sure the airline knew we were coming while my mother tried to keep up, so I got stuck in the awkward middle ground, keeping one eye on my father while making sure I didn’t lose my mother. As we ran, I couldn’t help but think, “I am sprinting through an airport with an action figure of Edgar Allan Poe. Biggest. Nerd. EVER.” We made the flight, but we weren’t happy about the anxiety of it all.
Otherwise, I have a few picture frames on my shelves. My mother took pictures of some vintage magazines when she was in Paris and framed them for me. I also have a giant box of swag on top of my shelf
2. What is your favorite mode of transportation?
Generally, the car. I hate flying (see above story) not so much because being in the air makes me nervous but because it’s such a huge procedure. However, when the weather’s nice I like to walk wherever I can, because it’s healthy. I also love to bike, but haven’t gotten a new bike since fifth grade. I think I’m due for an upgrade.
3. What gadget or invention do you wish you owned?
An iPad. I’m going to library school in the fall, and as a librarian I should know how to use an iPad, as well as all of the e-readers on the market. I’m thinking about using that excuse to purchase an iPad. It’s valid, right? Maybe? In some realm of this universe?
4. How many scarves do you own?
I’m not going to lie, I panicked when I first saw this question. The short answer is: a lot. The long answer is that when I spent a year abroad in England, I wanted to get some sort of small souvenir from each country I went to (I also visited Scotland, Spain, Greece and Ireland). Then the year after everyone in our family got at least two scarves for Christmas. My parents were in NY on business shop, found a cool scarf shop, and then found an even better scarf shop. I also get them as gifts quite a bit. So yeah, I have a scarf for pretty much every occasion.
You know, in retrospect, I’m just glad you didn’t ask me to count all of my books. I would have died.
5. What’s your favorite carnival attraction?
The unhealthy food! I live in Minnesota, and while technically Wisconsin is home of the cheese curd, we have them at our state fair. Apparently it takes eleven miles to walk off a serving of cheese curds, but they are so good. I also love cotton candy. I even tried a deep fried Snickers at the state fair this past year. I didn’t have a glass of milk and it was ninety degrees out, so while it was delicious, it was also overstimulating.
I agree, Liz – you should definitely get an iPad

Olivia the Pig and a Paddington Bear – AWWWWW!
The only other things on my bookshelves are – A flashlight (for looking at books in the dark), a stack of bookmarks, and envelopes for mailing books.
My fav. thing at the fair is – like you – the food!!!! and the Tilt-a-whirl! Whenever I am on the Tilt-a-whirl I laugh hysterically! It is uncontrollable.
I also own a ton of scarves – I knit, so I make them all.
A flashlight for looking at books in the dark, that’s clever! I also cannot stand the Tilt-a-Whirl, yuckkk

DUDE. They make Poe action figures!? I need to get me one of those! I have plush animals on my shelves, too, though they’re not literary at all (my personal favorite is my plus sleeping pig).
And, like shoes, you can never have too many scarves! =)
Fried Snickers?! Sounds so unhealthy…but intriguing…
I think that is a very valid excuse to get an iPad! Do it!
