Green Books Campaign 2010
Chick Loves Lit is participating in the Green Books Campaign of 2010! From their website:
On Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at 1:00 PM Eastern Time 200 bloggers will take a stand to support books printed on environmental paper by simultaneously publishing reviews of 200 such books.
Launched in 2009 by Eco-Libris, this campaign is aiming to promote “green” books by reviewing 200 books printed on recycled paper or FSC-certified paper. Choosing recycled and FSC certified paper helps protect the world’s forests, species and climate. Deforestation accounts for an estimated 20% of global carbon emissions, more than the emissions from the transportation, aviation and IT industries combined. By turning a spotlight on books printed using environmental paper, we want to raise the awareness of book buyers to this issue and encourage them to take it into consideration when purchasing books. Please check the campaign’s resources page for more information.
This year the campaign is supported by Indigo Books & Music, the largest book retailer in Canada, as part of its efforts to draw attention to the need for more environmental paper in book publishing. This is a core goal of Indigo’s environmental program and is reinforced by Indigo’s industry leading environmental paper policy. You can read more about it on Indigo’s environment page.
The book I received for this campaign is Going Blue: A Teen Guide to Saving our Oceans, Lakes, Rivers, & Wetlands by Cathryn Berger Kaye and Philippe Cousteau
This is a book aimed at teens looking to make a difference in their community, specifically through service learning projects. Each of the pages are printed in full color, and after the introduction we are brought through the stages of completing a service project: Find Out (Investigate), Dive In (Prepare), Get Going (Act), Think Back (Reflect), and Tell Your Story (Demonstrate). There are examples and facts in each of these sections, making it a book you will pick up more than just the once you read it through to learn about volunteering. Each page has a chart, picture, graph, or other extra learning opportunity (for example, did you know it takes 500 gallons of water to make a pair of jeans?) – which makes it both fun and informational.
Thank you to Free Spirit Publishing for providing this book and participating in the Green Books Campaign!
I have decided to give away my copy of Going Blue in hopes that it will make it to a classroom or library or other youth environment that can make use of it.

I’d love to win this copy to put into the school library!

I’d love to have you stop by and see what you think.
Sounds like a great teaching tool. I’m enjoying the other stops in the campaign.
This would be a great addition to my library. Thanks for the opportunity, and for enlightening me about the Green Books Campaign.
