Book Summary:
Doug Lee is undead quite by accident—attacked by a desperate vampire, he finds himself cursed with being fat and fifteen forever. When he has no luck finding some goth chick with a vampire fetish, he resorts to sucking the blood of cows under cover of the night. But it’s just not the same.
Then he meets the new Indian exchange student and falls for her—hard. Yeah, he wants to bite her, but he also wants to prove himself to her. But like the laws of life, love, and high school, the laws of vampire existence are complicated—it’s not as easy as studying Dracula. Especially when the star of Vampire Hunters is hot on your trail in an attempt to boost ratings.…

Review:
Fat Vampire started out with a lot of geeky references that really caught me up in the story – it’s not often I read a book where the characters love comics and Star Wars.

As you may have guessed, there is a vampire involved. He’s not a typical vampire, which added a bit of comedy to the reading too – a lot of vampires in novels nowadays are these perfect, gorgeous things that ends up being a love interest (at least, that’s what I’ve read). In Rex’s Fat Vampire, that’s not really the case – actually, we find Doug (our “Fat Vampire”) lusting after a girl who may or may not be interested in him.

In the beginning I found our two main guys interesting. They would banter back and forth, ask weird questions, make jokes, etc. As I got farther along in the book, I started to like Doug less and less and less.

My biggest problem with Doug is that he, frankly, turns into quite a jerk. It doesn’t seem like he is going to be that way when you start the book, but something apparently switches over and it’s hard for me to root for him anymore. And when I’m not rooting for the main character (when I’m pretty sure I’m supposed to), it’s kind of hard for me to like the book.

Another thing that led to the downfall is how the voice would switch from Doug to Sejal (the girl he likes) to the vampire hunter show – I would read entire passages and then realize I was imagining it from the wrong person’s point of view. And then have to re-read. Or I would read a few paragraphs and get very very confused, stare at the book for a moment, and then have to figure out which point of view I was reading. I would have preferred a header or some sort of indication that we were switching over.

Overall, Fat Vampire had good promise, but ended up to not be that great for me. Loved the first few chapters, and really love the cover, but sadly could not love Doug, which kind of ruined the whole thing for me.

I have an ARC of this and I was really looking forward to reading it. I wonder if in the finished version it will be made clearer whose point the chapter is from?

I am sorry that you were disappointed with this one. It has such an interesting premise. I like atypical vampire books like Sucks To Be Me and I thought this would be like that.
