Book Summary:
To save her mother’s life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters — never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.
As Clary uncovers more about her family’s past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadow-hunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadow-hunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he’s willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her new found powers to help save the Glass City — whatever the cost?
Love is a mortal sin and the secrets of the past prove deadly as Clary and Jace face down Valentine in the final installment of the New York Times bestselling trilogy The Mortal Instruments.
Steve Review:
At long last, the final book in this trilogy! But wait, rumor has it there is a spin off series coming out?! wtf. Yep, rumor confirmed, Shanyn picked me up a copy of the first book in the new Infernal Devices trilogy “Clockwork Angel” at BEA. While that was super nice of her, and I will undoubtedly read it, I’m gonna have to bitch to you guys for a minute:
(Begin rant) I’m just a little tired of EVERY good book coming out being a part of a series. What happened to the one and done wonders, what happened to being able to conclude a book without making it so there was 2 books of filler in a 7 book long series. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good series, some of my favorite novels are a part of a series, it’s just disheartening that each time I find a book that I like that I’m all of a sudden reading 4 more books to find out the true ending, and then there is a companion/spin off/prequel series to go along with it too. Sure, it’s all about making money, selling more books, getting your name recognized as an author, but can’t anyone do that anymore without writing a bunch of books with the same subject, same characters, and same plot? I fail to understand why an author would want to spend his or her time writing super similar novels day in and day out regardless of how successful they are. Sigh.
Neverless, I was pumped to read this one and for good reason. The final(ish) novel provided a lot of twists, turns, excitement and action. It stayed true to the characters and while some mistakes were made by each character most of them redeemed themselves in glorious fashion. I zoomed through this book and while I still fail to see how super amazing/hot Jace is, I loved Simon, Luke, Magnus, and Clary wasn’t half bad herself. :p A fun blend of magic and religion kept this book unique and some of the plot was truly surprising. Good book, good series, absolutely deserves its place amongst the top YA literature charts.
Book Cover: 4/5 – I liked this one best of the 3, can someone explain to me who that is though? Simon? Sebastian? ??
Book Title: 4/5 – Fine, fine, your books are about CITIES. Wait, no they aren’t.
Plot: 9/10 – Better than the others IMO.
Characters: 8/10 – A few new people, and more interactions with the characters we fell in love with during the first couple books kept the character aspect of this book quite strong.
Writing: 8/10 – Great YA fantasy.
Ending: 8/10 – Slightly spoiled by some characters having doubts for no reason. Just a touch of aftertaste though, not much.
Overall: 41/50 – Goooood.
PS: Looking back, this sounded quite harsh towards Ms. Clare and her series. I thoroughly enjoyed this series and will very likely read all of the next trilogy as well (apparently I’m part of the problem feeding the series machine? lol). It was by no means a personal attack, more of a general comment on a lot of the literature coming out in the past five or so years. If you guys have a non-series book suggestion, lay it on me, I’d love to read something that has all the elements needed for great literature in between 2 book covers instead of the 10-14 covers it has been taking recently to enclose “amazing reads”. And don’t forget about my question in the book cover section, I truly am curious!
I have to agree with you about the series rant. I think the waiting is the hardest part. You get so emotionally invested and you have to wait for the sequels and the trilogies and about seven more books after that to get to know how it truly ends – and most of the time, there's only one book published a year. I sometimes wonder if I'll live to see the end of the of some of the series that I read!
Great review, though. I'm a huge fan of this trilogy and I'm looking forward to reading Clockwork Angel.
The Mortal Instruments series is by far my favorite series. The character on the front is Sebastian. I was actually thrilled to find out there would be a fourth book in this series(City of Fallen Angels-Feb.2011) and a new prequel(Infernal Devices-Clockwork Angel-Aug. 2010).
I completely understand what you mean about single books though. I will admit that the majority of the books on my shelves are series or will be series. Sometimes it bothers me, but if it's a series I really love, I'm usually happy that the characters journeys are continuing on.
I feel your pain. I get so frustrated reading an awesome book only to find out it's part of a series and the rest aren't out yet!
Ugh! I try so hard to wait until they're all out so I don't have to wait, but it's not going to happen with Clockwork Angel or Fallen Angels b/c I love this series so much.
Series can be frustrating, although I am a fan of them overall, as long as they don't seem like a ploy to maintain a fan base. (I actually wrote a guest post about series for The Serpentine Library that will be posted on her blog next week.) Anyway, Cassie is one of my favorite YA authors and I love her books so far. Her plots are so layered and complicated, and need 3+ books to sort through it all, IMO. (:

I'm sorry I lied, City of Fallen Angels will be out in March, not Feburary.
