Fun Five: Author Shan Correa

1. What is your favorite vegetable?
Anything but Brussels sprouts!
2. Tell us about a recent trip you’ve taken.
Our last off-Island trip was a great Pacific Northwest vacation starting in Oregon where we stayed with our younger son, Brandon. Incidentally, he conducted his South Salem High School Symphony Orchestra students in a fun “Happy Birthday, Mrs. Correa” call to me on his cell on May 14th, just before they placed first in the state competition. H’ray, Brandon’s musicians!
3. How often do you rent movies?
Never.
4. What salty snack do you enjoy most?
Hawaiian potato or taro chips.
5. Describe the contents of your freezer.
Good stuff—my homemade Portuguese bean soup and sweet-and-sour spaghetti sauce, assorted meats and breads/pastries, ice cubes made from our super little lime tree’s juice and which melt on papaya or in drinks. Okay stuff—Lean Cuisine dinners, vegetables (I like shelled edamame and some of the new “steamfresh” veggies), individual lemon cakes I made that are perfect for strawberry shortcakes. Awful stuff—fruitcakes I tolerate in my freezer because my husband adores them!
More about GAFF:
Paul Silva lives in a magical place on a farm high in the hills of a lush, green Hawaiian island, where his disabled father raises, trains, and doctors to roosters cockfighting intended for cockfighting. The family business sickens Paul, but it’s the only way his family can continue to live in the place he loves. Eventually, he must realize that being a man goes beyond wielding the power to hurt people and animals, and meet the tests of making decisions in a real world, which is far from a paradise.
It only took a few paragraphs for me to be sucked into the voice of Paul. He speaks in very short sentences, which made it very easy for me to imagine that I was listening to Paul tell a story (when instead I was actually reading about him). It’s a unique topic for a book, and I would suggest it more to those interested in the topics mentioned in the summary (Hawaii or cockfighting). A quick, short read either way!
