Book Summary:
Lani and Erin are lifelong best friends — and total opposites. Lani’s a down-to-earth Taurus; Erin’s a fiery Leo. Lani likes to do her own thing; Erin prefers an entourage. They’ve always had wildly different tastes, from pizza toppings to guys.

That is, until Erin starts dating Jason.

From the minute Lani meets Jason, she can’t deny the amazing connection she feels with him. It’s like they’ve known each other their whole lives. She’s not sure if he feels it, too — but even if he does, he’s off-limits. Lani’s determined to ignore her feelings for Jason, no matter how powerful they are, rather than hurt her best friend.

Then Erin goes away for the summer — and Jason seems to appear everywhere Lani turns. How long can she keep running from the guy who just might be the love of her life?

Review:
My first Susane Colasanti book turned out to be one I enjoyed a lot. The plot seemed very similar to The Unwritten Rule by Elizabeth Scott (a girl who likes her best friend’s boyfriend), so I was glad to be able to read a few books in between so that I wouldn’t be comparing them directly.

In the beginning, I was annoyed with some of the ways Colasanti indicated speech. For instance:

I’m like, “Scott really needs new jeans”
He’s all, “I really need to get to lunch”

That ‘like’ and ‘all’ bit really got to me for awhile. It was used a lot… and I understand that it helped to form the voice of the narrator, but I felt like it could have been done a different way.

Once I got past that, the story really sucked me in. There are the normal inner dialogues about stealing your best friend’s boyfriend, but there are also other issues that are dealt with in this novel. Something I found especially fun was Lani and Erin’s obsession with fate – they talked a lot about horoscopes and palm reading and other fun topics.

When I got to the last 50 pages or so, I couldn’t believe how many events were hitting intense points – it was pretty impossible to get me to stop reading. I wasn’t expecting so much excitement that close to the end.

Overall, I really enjoyed my first Susane Colasanti book. While it was a topic I’ve read about before, Colasanti made it enjoyable, and I can’t wait to read more by this author!
